FAQs

1. Does Simmons Rehab accept insurance and/or how much does a session cost?

Our primary tool, MAT®, is not covered by insurance anywhere; therefore, payment is expected at the time of service. Some clients use their health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account. Because we have licensed physical therapists on staff, you may also be able to get reimbursed by your insurance company through out-of-network physical therapy benefits. You would need to check with your individual insurance provider to see what your out-of-network coverage is. Our fees for services range from $100-$225 per session, depending on which Specialist you see.

2. What conditions do you treat?

We treat all pain/injuries involving any joint, muscle or nerve including, but not limited to back pain, disc injuries, pinched nerves, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, headaches, fibromyalgia, TMJ, and sports injuries such as sprained ankles and shin splints among others.

3. What if I already have arthritis, is there anything you can do?

It is commonplace for people to have arthritis, and not hurt. In fact, unfortunately arthritis is part of the natural aging process. So why does some arthritis cause pain and some doesn’t? Most often the difference has to do with muscle health, i.e. stability around the joint and the mechanics of the whole limb (we believe these are also big contributors to why arthritis started in the first place). We can stabilize the muscles around the joint and improve the mechanics, which significantly reduces the debilitating effects of arthritis, and stop or slow its progression.
In summary, arthritis tells us more about your age than your pain. Arthritis may be WHAT you have, but we will treat WHY you have it.

4. Can you tell me more about how MAT works?

We believe the best way to explain how MAT® works is to first understand how the body works. An analogy is a good place to start…
Imagine the body as a big successful company with layers of management within its org chart.  The brain holds the highest position (CEO) with muscles next in line, and joints being last. The lowest level - joints - only do what their boss - muscles - tell or allow them to do. For example, to touch your toes (bend your back & hips all the way) requires “permission” from your hamstring muscles to do so. Similarly, the muscles only do what the brain tells or allows them to do. Does the brain have a boss or any accountability? Like any large successful company, the brain has a board of directors, or advisors, to give it valuable information to help make good decisions. These many “advisors” in the body are called mechanoreceptors or sensors for short. They are in constant communication with the brain; specifically about the body’s position in space and any forces acting on it. The brain needs this input to give the correct output to the muscles in order to (ultimately) get the right output to the joints for smooth efficient movement. With aging, injury or overuse, these sensors can fail to give appropriate input to the brain, resulting in faulty output to the muscles & joints, which perpetuates pain and injury. MAT® seeks to restore function to this system by stimulating the sensors in order to give the brain proper input. The brain then gives proper output to the muscles to then support the joints appropriately. Done properly, MAT® should cause your muscles to go from weak/unstable to strong/stable and your joints to go from tight to loose almost immediately.
MAT® is a neurological solution to an orthopedic problem.
